Should you buy the new M3 MacBook Pro and how does it compare to other models?

Apple's freshly revealed MacBook Pro lineup is now driven by the all-new M3 chip, offering a range that includes the top-tier M3 Pro and M3 Max variants, as well as a reworked entry-level model featuring the basic M3 chip. Let's explore how this new entry-level model stands up against its pricier counterparts.

Going back to 2021, Apple's MacBook Pro overhaul introduced 14-inch and 16-inch models while keeping the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar as a more cost-effective alternative. Equipped with the M2 chip, it provided 8GB of RAM and a 256GB storage base configuration, priced at $1,299.

In comparison to its more upscale peers, the 13-inch model felt somewhat outdated. It featured a 60Hz LCD display with conventional LED backlighting and noticeable bezels, missing the notch seen in the newer models. Its design remained largely unchanged from the 2016 MacBook Pro, offering only two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports without the convenience of MagSafe.

On the flip side, the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air boasted a modern display with sleek bezels, an improved webcam, MagSafe, and a slender, lightweight design, all within the same $1,299 price range. The sole advantages of the 13-inch MacBook Pro were two extra GPU cores and an internal fan for improved sustained performance.

Now, the brand-new entry-level MacBook Pro enters the scene at $1,599, providing an enticing choice for those seeking more than a MacBook Air without having to invest the full $1,999 for the top-of-the-line MacBook Pro experience. It offers the same display and premium design as its higher-priced counterparts, along with added I/O ports.

However, it's crucial to consider that 8GB of RAM might fall short when handling specific professional applications. Opting for a RAM upgrade increases the price to $1,799, putting it within a mere $200 of the M3 Pro version.

This brand-new entry-level MacBook Pro delivers a compelling middle-ground option for those in search of a blend of performance and value. However, it's important to be mindful of RAM requirements and budget constraints when selecting the right model.
