Apple has officially unveiled iOS 26 — and it’s more than just another annual update. It’s a visual and functional evolution that reimagines how users interact with their iPhones, grounded in a bold new design system and backed by powerful on-device intelligence.

A New Visual Language: Liquid Glass

At the center of this transformation is Liquid Glass, a design philosophy inspired by the immersive depth of visionOS. It gives the iPhone interface a more fluid, layered aesthetic — one that responds to movement, touch, and context. From icons to app surfaces, the entire operating system feels reformed, glistening with translucent materials and soft-lit edges that echo the hardware’s curvature. The Lock Screen, long a static entry point, now dynamically reshapes its typography, integrates animated album visuals, and even transforms photos into spatially aware images.

Messages Gets Smarter, More Expressive

Apple’s Messages app evolves from a simple chat tool to a full-featured communication hub. Users can now create polls within group chats, send and receive Apple Cash directly in conversations, and enjoy more personalization with custom backgrounds.

Real-time translation is built into the messaging experience, allowing users to type in one language and have their messages appear instantly in another — complete with translated replies. Expanded Genmoji support, powered by generative AI, brings creative new ways to react and express.

A Refined Camera and Photos Experience

The Camera app has been redesigned for clarity and speed. Rather than cluttering the viewfinder with too many options, iOS 26 simplifies the interface to just Photo and Video modes, while advanced controls are tucked neatly away for those who want them.

The Photos app gains intelligent curation and easier navigation, making it simpler to find meaningful memories or create personalized albums.

Phone and FaceTime Catch Up With the Times

The Phone app gets its most substantial update in years. A new unified interface brings contacts, call history, and voicemails into a single view. Call Screening answers unknown numbers on your behalf, collecting the caller’s name and purpose before ringing you. Hold Assist listens to hold music so you don’t have to, alerting you when it’s time to talk.

FaceTime also benefits from full-screen video, gesture-based UI, and contact posters for easier call initiation.

Safari, Maps, and More Join the Fluid Redesign

Safari introduces a cleaner browsing experience with full-screen content, where interface elements fade out until needed. The updated design is consistent across system apps like Maps and Photos, giving everything a cohesive feel.

Maps now adapts to your routine, offering preferred routes and commute suggestions while tracking your visited locations — with full control to delete location history if desired.

A New Games App for Players of All Levels

Apple is making gaming more accessible with the launch of a dedicated Games app. It serves as a central hub for all your titles, achievements, and Game Center data. Whether you're a casual gamer or a competitive one, the new app is designed to streamline access to your library and elevate the overall gaming experience.

Apple Intelligence Opens Up to Developers

One of the most transformative changes in iOS 26 is the expansion of Apple Intelligence to third-party apps. For the first time, developers can build features directly on top of Apple’s on-device AI models. These models offer fast, private, and powerful performance without relying on cloud-based processing — paving the way for smarter, more contextual apps across the App Store.

Visual Intelligence Turns Screens Into Action

Apple’s new Visual Intelligence feature lets you act on what you see. By analyzing screenshots or images on your device, it can identify relevant content — like dates, places, or products — and allow you to take action immediately. Add an event to your calendar, find directions, or search for similar items, all by interacting with what’s already on your screen.

Coming This Fall

iOS 26 will roll out to the public later this year, alongside the launch of the iPhone 17 lineup. With its sweeping redesign, smarter apps, and powerful intelligence integrations, it marks the beginning of a new chapter for how Apple envisions the future of the iPhone — dynamic, private, and deeply personal.
