Apple is taking a bigger step into generative AI with a redesigned Apple Intelligence system that brings stronger language, image, and reasoning features across its devices.

The updated platform is built around new Apple Foundation Models that were developed with Google and are based on technology connected to the Gemini model family. Apple says the models have been adapted for its own ecosystem, allowing them to operate both directly on devices and through Private Cloud Compute when more processing power is needed.

The change could make Apple Intelligence feel more capable across everyday tasks. Apple says the new models support stronger understanding, more advanced reasoning, and multimodal features, meaning the system can work with text, images, and other forms of input more effectively. New use cases include realistic image generation, more powerful photo editing tools, and the ability to answer questions about visual content.

Some devices will also gain access to a more advanced version of the model. Apple says this higher-performance model will support additional features such as speech generation, improved dictation, and better natural language understanding, though the company has not yet shared which devices will receive it.

A major part of the new system is an intelligence orchestrator that works behind the scenes to decide how Apple Intelligence should respond based on what the user is doing. The system can take into account the current app, task, and context, helping Apple move closer to AI features that work across the entire operating system rather than staying limited to individual apps.

Apple is also continuing to emphasize privacy as a key part of its AI strategy. The company says requests will be handled on-device whenever possible, while more complex tasks can be processed through Private Cloud Compute. Apple says user data is only used to complete the request and is not made available to Apple or outside parties.

The announcement shows Apple trying to close the gap with other major AI platforms while keeping its focus on privacy and device integration. By combining stronger foundation models with deeper system-level awareness, Apple Intelligence could become a more central part of how users interact with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other Apple products.
