Apple Announces AirPods 5 With Active Noise Cancellation, Smarter Audio Features and New Controls

Apple is expanding noise cancellation further down its AirPods lineup with the new AirPods 5, bringing several features previously associated with more expensive models to its mainstream wireless earbuds.

The fifth-generation AirPods arrive in two configurations, beginning at $129. Apple has redesigned the acoustic system and updated Adaptive EQ, aiming to deliver fuller sound with greater detail across different types of audio. Transparency mode has also been refined to make environmental sounds and conversations feel more natural while the earbuds are being worn.

Active Noise Cancellation is one of the biggest upgrades. Apple says AirPods 5 can reduce significantly more surrounding noise than the ANC-equipped AirPods 4, while Adaptive Audio can automatically adjust the balance between noise cancellation and outside sound depending on the wearer’s environment.

Conversation Awareness remains part of the experience as well, automatically reducing media volume when the user begins speaking. AirPods 5 also work with Apple’s Live Translation feature when connected to a supported Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, allowing the earbuds to assist with conversations across different languages.

Apple is also selling a $149 configuration that includes a Wireless Charging Case and additional controls. This model introduces swipe gestures on the stems for adjusting volume without reaching for an iPhone.

Battery life reaches up to five hours with Active Noise Cancellation enabled and as much as 22 hours when using the charging case. The upgraded case supports USB-C along with Qi and Apple Watch wireless chargers.

AirPods 5 are available for preorder beginning today and will reach customers and stores on Friday, September 18.
