Apple Debuts iPhone Duo, Bringing a Foldable Design to the iPhone

Apple is entering the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, a new flagship device built around a 7.6-inch inner display and a smaller 5.4-inch outer screen.

Rather than treating the foldable design as a secondary feature, Apple has reworked both the hardware and iOS around the two-screen layout. Apps can move seamlessly between displays, two apps can run side by side, and users can save app pairings for faster multitasking. The interface also changes depending on how far the device is opened, including layouts designed for partially folded use.

At the center of the design is a new hinge assembled from more than 100 precision parts. Apple says the display structure uses multiple flexible layers, adhesives, titanium reinforcement, and carbon fiber support to reduce stress as the device repeatedly opens and closes. A specialized surface treatment is also intended to make the center crease less noticeable while reducing glare.

When unfolded, the iPhone Duo becomes Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date. Its titanium frame houses much of the internal hardware around the camera area, while Ceramic Shield protects both sides of the device. The phone carries an IP68 rating and will be offered in Star White and Night Sky.

Performance comes from the same A20 Pro chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Apple has paired it with its new C2 modem, which adds faster cellular performance, lower power consumption, and mmWave 5G support in the United States. The Duo is also Apple’s first iPhone to rely entirely on eSIM across every market.

Battery hardware is split between the two halves of the phone but operates as one system. Apple rates the device for up to 24 hours when both displays are used regularly, with longer runtimes possible when relying mainly on one screen. Fast charging can bring the battery to 50% in roughly 20 minutes.

The camera system includes a 48-megapixel Main camera and a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera. Because the phone can support itself while partially folded, Apple is also positioning the Duo as a more flexible photography and video device, including hands-free time-lapse recording in 4K Dolby Vision HDR.

A 12-megapixel front camera sits on the outside display, while another camera is placed beneath the inner screen for FaceTime calls. New camera software can use both displays at once, allowing subjects to see themselves during a photo or letting another person participate in a FaceTime call from the outer screen.

Apple has also created several features specifically for the foldable form factor. The Duo can act as a bedside display when propped open, show widgets for music, weather, and calendars, and adjust speaker tuning depending on the angle of the device. Apple Pencil support for both displays is scheduled to arrive later this year.

Touch ID is integrated into the side button rather than using Face ID, and Apple Watch owners can also use their watch to unlock the device.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB of storage and will be available with capacities up to 2TB. Preorders open October 16, followed by availability beginning October 23. Apple is also introducing dedicated Duo cases, including a Folio option with a built-in stand.
