Apple Announces iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max With A20 Pro, Longer Battery Life and New Camera Features
Apple’s latest Pro iPhones focus less on changing the look of the device and more on improving the hardware underneath it. The new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max arrive with major upgrades to battery life, photography, cooling, performance and charging, while maintaining the familiar 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes.
One of the biggest changes this year is battery endurance. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 24 hours of typical use, putting the smaller Pro roughly in line with last year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max. The larger iPhone 18 Pro Max stretches that figure to as much as 30 hours, which Apple describes as its largest year-over-year battery improvement for the model.
Charging speeds have also improved, with the iPhone 18 Pro capable of reaching 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes with compatible equipment.
Inside, Apple has moved to the new A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC’s 2-nanometer process. The chip includes a new Neural Engine and upgraded graphics architecture, with Apple claiming substantially better sustained performance than the A19 Pro generation. To help maintain that performance during demanding workloads, the company has also significantly enlarged the vapor chamber cooling system.
Photography is another major area of attention. The 48-megapixel Main camera now includes a variable-aperture system built around six adjustable blades. Rather than relying on a fixed opening, the camera can alter its aperture depending on lighting conditions and the amount of depth of field needed for a shot.
Apple has paired the hardware change with an updated computational photography pipeline designed to improve detail and low-light results. Photographic Styles have also gained additional controls for texture and grain, giving users more flexibility over the appearance of images before they are captured.
The Camera app itself is becoming noticeably more advanced on the Pro models. A new Pro controls interface provides quicker access to settings including aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a histogram can be displayed for monitoring exposure. Time-lapse recording has also been upgraded to support 4K video with Dolby Vision HDR.
Externally, the design remains close to the previous Pro generation, although Apple has reduced the size of the Dynamic Island. The updated interface area can now accommodate as many as three Live Activities simultaneously.
Apple is offering the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, with the rear aluminum and Ceramic Shield sections receiving a more closely matched finish. Storage options now extend as high as 2TB for the first time.
Pricing in the United States starts at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12, with retail availability beginning Friday, September 18.
Apple is also expanding its eSIM-only strategy beyond the United States. Models sold in markets including Canada, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates will no longer include a physical SIM tray, while units sold across the U.K. and most of Europe will continue supporting physical SIM cards.
Alongside the phones, Apple introduced an updated collection of accessories, including Silicone and TechWoven cases, FineWoven wallets, Crossbody Straps and a new Wrist Strap.
