Apple Announces A20 Pro Chip With 2nm Architecture, Faster Graphics and Major AI Upgrades


Apple is making on-device AI and sustained performance a central part of the iPhone 18 Pro generation with its new A20 Pro chip, a 2-nanometer processor designed for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Rather than focusing only on peak benchmark improvements, Apple is emphasizing how much performance the chip can maintain over longer periods. The company says the A20 Pro can deliver up to 40% better sustained performance than the A19 Pro and roughly double that of the A18 Pro.
A redesigned thermal system plays a major role in those gains. Apple developed new packaging inspired by its M-series chips, allowing the processor and memory to transfer heat more effectively into the iPhone 18 Pro’s vapor chamber. The goal is to reduce throttling during demanding tasks such as gaming, AI processing and professional workflows.
The A20 Pro also brings significant changes to machine learning. Its Neural Engine now includes 32 cores and supports 8-bit floating-point calculations, while neural accelerators integrated into the GPU provide additional performance for AI workloads. Apple says these upgrades are designed to make larger language models and other advanced models more practical to run directly on the device.
Graphics performance has also taken a step forward. The new 7-core GPU offers greater memory bandwidth and up to 40% higher graphics performance, according to Apple, while FP8 neural processing performance has doubled compared with the previous generation.
On the CPU side, the A20 Pro uses six cores, including two new high-performance cores and four efficiency cores. Apple says its faster cores can deliver gains of up to 20% and are designed to handle more demanding workloads without sacrificing power efficiency.
With the A20 Pro, Apple appears to be pushing the iPhone further toward workloads that traditionally relied more heavily on cloud processing or desktop-class hardware. The combination of faster graphics, expanded neural processing, a wider memory interface and improved cooling makes the chip one of the most significant internal upgrades in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
