  • Are new Apple Intelligence features worth upgrading to the iPhone 16 models?

Apple’s latest iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models come equipped with Apple's latest set of AI features called Apple Intelligence , which helps improve the overall user experience. But is it enough to justify upgrading? Here’s a breakdown of what Apple Intelligence offers and whether it makes sense to move up to the new models. What is Apple Intelligence? Apple Intelligence brings a range of smart AI-powered tools to your iPhone, including suggested replies in Messages, real-time call transcription , photo clean-up tool for removing unwanted objects in images, Genmoji which helps create custom unique emojis, and Image Playground allowing users to create their own images. It can also help with everyday tasks like summarizing notifications and offering proofreading suggestions, making your device more intuitive and efficient. Siri has received a major update, featuring a completely revamped design and the ability to interact with users through text input. Now, users can simply type their queries to Siri, offering a more discreet way to engage with the assistant. In addition to this, Siri can now collaborate with ChatGPT for more complex questions or information. Importantly, Siri will always ask for permission before reaching out to ChatGPT, ensuring user privacy and control throughout the experience. The new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 models works similarly to Google Lens, allowing users to open the Camera app and instantly access information about the world around them. With a simple snap, users can gather details such as a restaurant’s operating hours or view its menu, all without leaving the Camera app. This feature brings a seamless, integrated way to interact with your environment, making everyday tasks quicker and more intuitive. iPhone 15 Pro Has It Too If you’re already using the iPhone 15 Pro, you might already have access to Apple Intelligence. Apple introduced some of these AI features with the iPhone 15 Pro models, so if you own one, you may not need to upgrade just for this functionality. However, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro take these capabilities further with a faster chip and more advanced integration. Why Consider Upgrading to the iPhone 16? The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro offer enhanced AI performance thanks to the upgraded A18 chip and A18 Pro , which makes Apple Intelligence work even faster and more smoothly. If you’re someone who frequently uses your phone for productivity, photography, or communication, the more powerful AI tools in the iPhone 16 models could make daily tasks more convenient. Should You Upgrade? If you’re using an iPhone 15 Pro, the jump to the iPhone 16 Pro might not feel as dramatic, since you already have access to Apple Intelligence. However, if you’re coming from an older model, the combination of Apple Intelligence, improved battery life, better cameras, and faster performance in the iPhone 16 series could make it a worthwhile investment. In short, while Apple Intelligence is a great addition, it might not be the sole reason to upgrade unless you’re already looking for improvements in speed, battery, and camera quality. If you have an older device, the iPhone 16 models bring significant overall improvements.

  • Apple introduces 'The Observatory,' a striking subterranean venue at Apple Park

Apple has introduced a new architectural addition to its Apple Park campus, expanding the environment for product launches and demonstrations. Known as "The Observatory," this underground venue is designed as a tranquil, immersive space that will host events. This new facility offers a fresh alternative to the familiar Steve Jobs Theater, where many of Apple's major product releases have historically taken place. The design of The Observatory reflects Apple’s commitment to integrating architecture with the natural surroundings of its campus. The subterranean structure is crafted using natural materials such as stone, terrazzo, and wood, creating a warm and inviting space despite being located beneath the surface. The centerpiece of the building is a grand circular entrance, which leads to a spacious hall illuminated by a large oculus overhead, allowing natural light to flood into the interior. John De Maio, Apple’s global head of design for real estate and development, highlighted that the design of The Observatory is consistent with the overall vision for Apple Park — a campus that merges seamlessly with its environment. Despite being underground, the building incorporates elements that evoke a sense of openness and connection to the landscape. This includes a terrace that offers views of Apple Park through a unique, portal-like opening, enhancing the sense of space. Environmentally conscious practices were central to the construction of The Observatory, in keeping with Apple's sustainability goals. The building operates entirely on renewable energy, and care was taken to minimize its ecological impact during construction. Approximately 90 trees were temporarily removed from the site and replanted after the building's completion, ensuring that the surrounding landscape was preserved. The venue’s design borrows from the aesthetic seen in Apple’s flagship stores, with a focus on community and gathering spaces. Potted trees and ample seating create a welcoming atmosphere, making it not just a space for product demonstrations but also a place for contemplation and connection. Apple Park, known for its innovative design and environmental efforts, continues to evolve with this latest addition, reinforcing Apple’s reputation for blending cutting-edge technology with thoughtful design and sustainability.

  • EU court orders Apple to repay €13 billion in illegal tax benefits following final ruling

The European Union's Court of Justice has ruled that Ireland gave Apple illegal tax benefits worth €13 billion from 1991 to 2014, confirming the European Commission's original 2016 decision. This final ruling means Ireland must recover the funds, which Apple placed in an escrow account around six years ago. Apple and Ireland had previously appealed the decision, with the EU's General Court ruling in their favor in 2020, saying there wasn’t enough proof of preferential treatment. However, the Court of Justice has now overturned that ruling, siding with the Commission. Apple expressed disappointment, maintaining it followed all tax laws. The company expects a one-time $10 billion tax charge in its upcoming financial report. Meanwhile, Ireland, which initially supported Apple's appeal, stated it will respect the ruling and recover the funds. The case highlights the EU's efforts to tackle corporate tax avoidance, with Apple’s effective tax rate falling as low as 0.005% on its European profits during the period in question. The Commission argued that profits were funneled through Irish subsidiaries and untaxed "head offices." Ireland has since changed its tax laws to prevent similar issues in the future.

With the release of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, major U.S. carriers are rolling out enticing offers to attract new customers and reward existing ones. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are all offering significant promotions on Apple’s latest flagship devices, making it easier than ever for users to upgrade or switch carriers. Here’s a breakdown of the deals from each provider. AT&T: Up to $1,000 Off With Trade-In AT&T is offering one of the most aggressive deals for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. Customers can get up to $1,000 off with a qualifying trade-in when they sign up for a 36-month installment plan on one of AT&T’s Unlimited plans. This means that the iPhone 16 Pro could be yours for free, depending on the value of your trade-in device. To qualify, customers must trade in a recent model iPhone or high-value Android device, such as the Samsung Galaxy S23. The trade-in value is applied as monthly credits over the 36-month period, effectively lowering the cost of the new iPhone. This deal is available for both new and existing customers. AT&T is also offering existing customers the chance to upgrade early, with certain promotions available when switching from an older plan to the latest Unlimited offerings. Verizon: Trade-In Deals and Extra Perks Verizon is matching AT&T’s offer, with up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro for those who trade in a qualifying device. Like AT&T, Verizon requires customers to sign up for a 36-month installment plan on one of their 5G Unlimited plans, with trade-in credits applied over time. In addition to trade-in offers, Verizon is also bundling extra perks for customers, such as six months of Apple One, which includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Arcade. This bundle can save users over $100 during the promotional period, making Verizon’s deal even more appealing for those already integrated into Apple’s ecosystem. Verizon also emphasizes its 5G Ultra Wideband network, promoting it as the fastest and most reliable option for iPhone 16 users looking to maximize their experience with 5G capabilities. New customers switching to Verizon can also receive a $200 gift card, which can be applied to future bills or accessories. T-Mobile: “Go5G Plus” Plan and Exclusive Offers T-Mobile continues to push its “Go5G Plus” plan, offering new and existing customers up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro with an eligible trade-in. Unlike other carriers, T-Mobile is promoting its “Forever Upgrade” program, which guarantees users up to $800 off their next upgrade every two years, keeping them eligible for new iPhone models as they are released. T-Mobile’s trade-in credits are applied over a 24-month period, slightly shorter than AT&T and Verizon’s 36-month installments, allowing for quicker upgrades and payments. On top of that, T-Mobile is offering free AppleCare for a limited time, providing additional protection against accidental damage or issues with the device. For those already on T-Mobile’s Magenta Max or Go5G Plus plans, there are exclusive promotions, including free Netflix subscriptions and extra data options for traveling abroad. New customers switching from other carriers can take advantage of up to $500 in credits to cover early termination fees. Which Deal is Best for You? Choosing the right carrier deal largely depends on your needs. If you’re looking to get the most value out of a trade-in, AT&T and Verizon are offering nearly identical promotions with up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. Verizon adds extra perks, such as Apple One, while AT&T is great for those who prefer a straightforward credit system over the course of their installment plan. T-Mobile, on the other hand, offers more flexibility with shorter 24-month contracts and their “Forever Upgrade” program, making it the go-to option for frequent upgraders. Additionally, T-Mobile’s inclusion of AppleCare and free Netflix makes their offer especially attractive to those seeking comprehensive benefits.
